Joe McCann, a hedge fund founder with over 25 years of experience, has developed a unique approach to investing in meme coins. His Technology Master Fund is ranked third globally in terms of 12-month cumulative returns as of March 2024.
McCann’s strategy, known as Meme Street, combines traditional risk mitigation techniques with the volatility of the meme coin market. He emphasizes the importance of remaining unemotional during market downturns to avoid making poor trading decisions.
One key aspect of Meme Street is focusing on liquidity by only investing in blue-chip meme coins with market caps exceeding $1 billion for at least 90 days. Additionally, McCann limits exposure to coins outside the top 20% of the total crypto market cap to 2% of the fund.
McCann’s successful $BONK trade in 2023 exemplifies his approach to identifying opportunities in the meme coin market. By analyzing stablecoin flows from Ethereum to Solana, McCann predicted a price surge in $SOL and strategically invested in $BONK, resulting in a significant rally.
To determine exit points, McCann utilizes real-time order flow analysis to assess whether inflows into a particular asset indicate accumulation or distribution. This data-driven approach helps identify optimal times to exit meme coin trades.
Looking ahead to 2025, McCann is optimistic about Bitcoin and Solana due to increasing institutional interest. However, he cautions against chasing hype for quick gains and emphasizes the need for strategic trading in the evolving market landscape.
